Market research team “Gartner,” have predicted that sales of tablet devices such as Apple’s iPad will grow dramatically over the next few years. Gartner say that by next year worldwide units sold will increase to 55 million over the current 20 million, and by 2014 figures should reach 208 million.
A report by Yahoo! News states, North America will be held accountable for the lions share of sales this year with 61 percent, but by 2014 their purchases will drop to 43 percent.
While Apple set the standard with their iPad when it was released in April, more and more companies are bringing their own versions of multimedia tablets into the market. Being able to watch videos, read electronic books and surf the Web from hand-held devices is becoming increasingly more popular.
Obviously with the massive increase expected from tablet computers, sales figures of netbooks and smaller laptops will be affected. Carolina Milanesi, Gartner’s research vice president said in an interview: “The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalisation of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players,” she also commented, “Mini notebooks will suffer from the strongest cannibalisation threat as media tablet average selling prices drop below 300 dollars over the next two years.”
