Whilst most of people looking at cell phones online will be bombarded with information of Apple products, Samsung has quietly gone about its business and added another smartphone to its roster on the official website.
They are calling it the Samsung Gem; we are thinking that this is going to be a cheaper alternative to the pricey up market smartphones currently on the market. Let’s have a look at what it’s got and see what you think.
The phone has a 3.2” WQVGA touch screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 124MB internal storage although this is expandable up to 16GB via microSD card, it supports the following file types AMR-WB. WMA (V9/10), SP-MIDI, AAC, AAC+, MIDI, AMR-NB, eAAC+, WAV and MP3.The Samsung website also says that it will be running on the Android Éclair platform, as for carriers it says CDMA Generic.
The screen is has anti-smudge, anti-scratch and anti-reflective glass and it also has an 800MHz CPU processor. Something that is apparent through out the features is that fact that this device isn’t going to cost you an arm and a leg; it will be extremely competitively priced. You can read their full feature and spec list on the official website.
Whilst we have seen that the device has a CDMA chip present, Samsung’s website makes no attempt to say which actual carrier this phone will be on, but Alex Wagner of phonedog.com suspects Verizon is a possible candidate. He says that the device has had leaks with the Verizon branding.
Ok, this doesn’t look like it has the best specs in the market and by no means do we suspect that the phone is going to set the world on fire like the iPhone did, but with careful pricing and a simple UI, this could in fact be marketed not only as a budget phone but as a great device for smartphone first timers.
What do you think of the device so far? Will you be picking one of these up? Let us know in the comments field below.
