We’ve been writing about a lot of the new Android smartphones that are due out and two that are drawing a lot of attention right now are the Motorola Atrix 4G phone coming to AT&T and the Samsung Galaxy S2 (or S II – official name), with no carrier, confirmed yet.
If you’re heading out to buy the Atrix 4G, which is no doubt a great phone, this is due for release in just two more days, but you may be wondering if you should hang on to take a look at the Galaxy S2 which is due out this month in Europe but at some point in Q2 in the U.S.
We’ve written many articles on both of these handsets so if you want to catch up a little, hit the following links. For the Atrix 4G we’ve recently given a comparison with the Motorola Droid Bionic, also a 4G phone but for Verizon. We’ve also given details on pricing, a review roundup, and the fact that before it has even hit the shelves it’s already been rooted. For the Samsung Galaxy S2, we’ve compared it against the upcoming Apple iPhone 5, given a preview and also official specs.
We’ve made these comparisons using our own previous articles and some information from an article on Gizmo Crunch by Nicole Ferguson. As far as operating systems go the Atrix 4G will be running Android 2.2, while the Galaxy S2 due out that bit later will be on Android 2.3. For core components both handsets have a dual-core processor, both have 16GB of storage and both have 1GB of RAM, so little to choose between them there. The Galaxy S2 also has a quad-core GPU and HSPA+ 4G connectivity while the Atrix also has HSPA+ 4G connectivity.
Display-wise the Galaxy S2 has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display (800 x 480) as opposed to the 4-inch qHD display (960 x 540) on the Atrix 4G. The Samsung S2 gets ahead on the camera front as it has an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facing camera while the Atrix 4G packs a 5-megapixel rear camera and VGA front-facing. Video recording on the Samsung S2 can be captured at 1080p against the Atrix 4G at 720p.
Looking at the batteries though is where the Atrix has the advantage with a 1930mAH battery against the smaller 1650mAH battery of the Galaxy S2. The Atrix 4G also features a fingerprint scanner and Ambient light sensor while the Galaxy S2 has a gyroscope and some versions will also feature NFC (near-field communication).
Where the Atrix 4G could win out is the extra docking accessories with a laptop dock enabling your phone to have PC-like functionality but overall these are both highly impressive phones. If you’re interested in the docking accessories for the Atrix 4G that will swing it for you, although they are not cheap, though Camera-wise you’d be better off waiting for the Galaxy S II
Of course, ultimately price and carrier will come into it too but as we have neither of these details confirmed yet for the Galaxy S2 we can’t help you out with that just yet. The full product page for the Atrix 4G is up and running on the Motorola website here and as that’s out any day now you may want to check it out for more detail. One thing for sure is that it’s very hard to choose an outright winner between these two handsets but depending on your own personal requirements we hope that there’s enough detail here to help you choose.
