YouTube is 10 years old on Valentine’s Day February 14, 2015, and what an amazing ten years they have had. It all started with your parents Chad Hurley, Steven Chen and Jawed Karim, all former employees of PayPal that founded YouTube.
YouTube’s birth was an amazing one where the domain name was created on 14th February 2005 in San Mateo, California, with the site officially being launched in December 2005.
Thanks to a special infographic courtesy of ‘One Productions’ we can learn more about the birth, growth and where they are now. For example, YouTube’s first words, first steps and much more.
When it comes to YouTube’s first words it was on April 23, 2005, when the 1st ever video was uploaded, which was 20 seconds long. The video in question was called “Me at the Zoo” and shows co-founder Jawed Karim talking about the long trunks of elephants. The first words utter on YouTube were “All right, so here we are in front of the elephants.”
The first steps include YouTube gaining more than 3 million visitors by the first month after launch, 38 million visitors by the end of the first year. Its growth is astonishing too, its grandparent id Google after buying them out in 2006, they got $15 million in cash, as well as 3,217,560 shares of Google Class Q Common Stock and 442,210 shares of restricted stock and warrant.
The deal after this was worth a staggering $1.775 billion to its shareholders. Before Google took over the video uploading site was losing around half a million dollars per month.
