It was only a week or so ago that we reported on how airlines were increasingly turning to social media to optimize customer relations and now we have a great example of that from Delta Airlines. The company launched a Facebook app back in August last year but from today customers can not only book flights via the app, but can also check-in for flights and check their flight status using it.
Checking in for a flight is now available through the Ticket Counter App where you can also check your SkyMiles too. As well as the Facebook app, Christina Warren over on Mashable, reports that mobile apps for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry are all available. Similarly to the Delta Airlines website, if you have the Delta Facebook Ticket Counter app you can print out boarding passes in the same way.
The app also allows sharing from customers about their flights, plans etc, with other Facebook users. This is certainly one case of an airline using social media in the most positive way for the benefit of its customers and the more commonplace it becomes, the more other airlines will hopefully adopt social media practices more wholeheartedly. Another airline that we previously reported was using social media successfully in this way was Malaysia Airlines, which also has a Facebook app.
