Twitter and Billboard have just made live its Trending 140 real-time chart, this will show top artist and song trends on Twitter in the U.S.
The Billboard Twitter real-time chart will provide users with up-to-the-minute ranks, which includes Position, Song and Artist, % Change and Trend. In first place as of May 29, 2014 is Come Try It by Soulja Boy; the list changes in real-time so this may have changed since.
What is very interesting is the way the song shares are tracked, this can be done multiple ways including links to music platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, Vevo as well as many hashtags such as #nowplaying, it also include much more in music terms such as “song”, “music”, in tweets.
If you visit the Top Trending 140 Billboard + Twitter here you will see ‘Play The Chart’ Spotify at the top right, just click it and you can here the song. If you look at the Trending 140 list itself all you need to do is click on it to share to Twitter, for example if I click on Come Try It by Soulja Boy the tweet would say this below –
#Nowplaying @souljaboy’s Come Try It – currently at number 1 on the @Billboard @Twitter Trending 140 chart http://t.co/TpflVZ24sN

On the right side of the board under ‘Trend’ just hover over it next to the artist and song and you will be taken to their Twitter profile. Users can also filter to show the most shared songs within a 24-hour period, as well as track emerging artists and much more.
Many tweeters will love the Billboard and Twitter partnership; the ability to track the conversation around music as it happens and put it into a chart is pure brilliance.
