Twitter Dan Wheldon RIP Tributes: Indy500 Champ

The world of IndyCar racing and its fans, have woken up this morning to the sad news that one of its best racing drivers Dan Wheldon has passed away on Sunday in Las Vegas. All over the world people are paying tribute to Wheldon who was killed after his vehicle crashed into a 15-car pileup. He died at the scene.

Legendary Wheldon who will be remembered for winning the Indy500 twice over, was competing as espn.go.com reported in only his third IndyCar race of the season with the intention of winning a $5 million bonus. With some 34 vehicles competing around the track, the pileup began within minutes of the race starting when two vehicles touched tyres.

Tributes from some of the biggest names such as Jenson Button have been pouring in, with Button taking to Twitter and tweeting, “Just woken up to the horrific news. Dan Wheldon RIP… I have so many good memories of racing with Dan in the early 90’s, a true fighter.” As the huffingtonpost.co.uk reported, along with Button, ex F1 driver Martine Brundle tweeted, “It’s so sad, so sad about Dan Wheldon. Deepest condolences to his wife and young children along with family and friends. This is a cruel sport.”

Celebrity sportsman LeBron James was another who tweeted, “RIP to Indy Car Driver Dan Wheldon! Dies in 15-car crash at Las Vegas Race. You’ll be missed from Sports.”
