Will Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Take the Shine Off iPhone 5 Launch?

August 29, 2021 | Debbie Turner

For some time now we’ve been keeping our readers informed on what we have referred to as the great triad of smartphones currently dominating the tech headlines. They are the Samsung Galaxy S II (or S2), the Motorola Droid Bionic and the Apple iPhone 5. Yesterday we gave you news that the Galaxy S II 4G LTE handset has now been officially announced by Samsung, and today we wanted to look at whether this latest news will take the shine off the iPhone 5 launch.

Many of you have been waiting for the Galaxy S II to arrive in the US but there was major disappointment last week when it was confirmed that Verizon would NOT be carrying it. However, this was all stirred up again on the announcement of the Galaxy S II LTE although no release date or price has been announced yet. Whether Verizon will carry the Galaxy S II LTE is not yet known but it does seem that it will be coming to the Big Red or AT&T at some point.

We already know that the Motorola Droid Bionic is coming to Verizon with 4G LTE support but what is not yet known is if the iPhone 5 will have 4G LTE. We have been writing about this for some time and how important it is to potential iPhone 5 customers and recently we heard that an iPhone with LTE was being tested. However the general consensus of opinion at the moment is that the iPhone 5 will probably NOT be 4G LTE-equipped, although it’s a possibility for the iPad 3. We do know that a Samsung product launch for the standard Galaxy S II in the US is to be held tomorrow, (delayed from today because of Hurricane Irene), however we were only expecting to hear about the three standard Galaxy S II variants for the US carriers AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Samsung had previously teased us with a video suggestion of an LTE Galaxy S II but it was expected to be officially unveiled at IFA in Berlin, beginning on September 1. Could the reason that Samsung chose to announce the LTE version early, on a Sunday no less, be an attempt to steal the thunder from the iPhone 5? We’ve already told how invitations for an Apple event to launch the iPhone are expected to go out soon so what better way for Samsung to steal the limelight from the iPhone 5 than to announce its LTE version first. If you also take into account Samsung’s ongoing legal battles with Apple, this might seem like a shrewd move on Samsung’s part.

The Galaxy S II LTE handset is to have an upgraded processor, to a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, from the standard 1.2GHz dual-core, and will also have a larger 4.5-inch display so we reckon that many of you will be more than happy to hear its announcement, especially after the letdown that Verizon is to miss out on the standard Galaxy S II. We’ll remind you that we don’t know yet who will carry the Galaxy S II LTE in the US but anything is possible!

We’d like to hear your thoughts on this. If the Galaxy S II LTE were to come to AT&T or Verizon would you opt for this over the iPhone 5? Does it matter to you if the iPhone 5 has LTE support or not? Maybe you were always going to choose the standard Galaxy S II over the iPhone in either case? Let us know with your comments.
