Sony PS4 & Xbox 720: What Would You Like From Them?

August 7, 2021 | Matt Tran

Gaming today is one of the biggest businesses in the world, generating billions each year from the sales of consoles, games and accessories. I think it is fair to say that the 2 established leaders in this industry is Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Both companies have confirmed that they are currently developing their next generation consoles, namely the PS4 and Xbox 720, but what would you like to see them bring this time around?

One of the biggest arguments I normally hear from my friends is about online play. Xbox Live is a paid for subscription service and Sony offer their users the PlayStation Network for free. The general feeling is that as a result of Microsoft charging for multiplayer, it is worth it as you get a better service. What really upsets many gamers is the fact that there is no cross platform gaming which would allow users of both Xbox and PS3 to play online together. It has been said that Microsoft’s Windows 8 software bring the capability to play Xbox 360 games on your PC.

Obviously not everyone can afford both consoles and some stay loyal to only one anyway, so in my eyes the integration of cross platforming would be a great addition. I think it would certainly be a feature that attracts more users to the 720 or PS4, as well as not having to chose based on which console your friends buy. There have even been rumors that Sony and Microsoft may combine to create a console together. Microsoft’s software inside Sony’s hardware would make for a very interesting games console.

Whilst we are on the subject of hardware, the PlayStation 3 has a Blu-ray and 3D drive, a feat which the Xbox 360 does not. I am assuming that these key features will return with the PS4 and hopefully the 720 will adopt a few of them too. The PlayStation 3 also has its wireless adapter built in, for a more smooth rounded console where the Xbox relies on a connection from the back. Other issues that the 720 may want to address is its noisiness and bulky power cord. It has been claimed the 720 will come with breath taking graphics, reminiscent of those from James Cameron’s Avatar movie.

The PS3 has the ability to run 3D games such as Black Ops, although being a novelty, playing the game is made harder and after a while your eyes and head hurt. Would you like to see the Xbox 720 support 3D gaming with the PS4? One of the biggest advantages the Xbox 360 has over the PS3 is the hugely successful Kinect. The hands free motion sensing accessory has really put the PS Move to shame, however it has been rumored the PS4 will have this technology built in.

Sony’s 4th games console could launch as early as next year, entering into a 2012 sales war with Nintendo’s Wii U. You may be aware that Sony mysteriously just delayed the launch of their new portable console; the PlayStation Vita will miss Christmas and be with us next year. Does the probable launch of the PS4 have anything to do with this? Nintendo recently slashed the prices of their struggling 3DS consoles, however Sony maintain it has nothing to do with their delay decision.

In terms of prices, what can we expect from the 720 and PS4? The key factor is to make the consoles affordable to all, no mater how advanced and flashy they are. The Xbox has always been cheaper than the PS3, although Sony did slash their prices down to around £170 to make it more affordable and competitive. This could further hint to the PS4′s launch in 2012 as it is a similar strategy Apple has just done with the iPhone 4, making it cheaper to make room for the imminent iPhone 5. Overall, how much would you be prepared to pay for one of these future consoles?

We found out that Foxconn who supply Sony with parts, are planning to replace a majority of its workforce with robots by 2014. Do you think that machines creating these gadgets instead of man will have an impact on the gaming industry? I can see changes. As an owner of both consoles, for me the greatest addition would be the cross platform gaming, what about you? We are very interested to hear your thoughts and wishes on all of the things we have spoken about. Tell us what you would like to see from the PS4 and Xbox 720 by leaving a comment.

may be improved graphics for both console, make the new console cheap. also 3d support for xbox720 will be good. we dont need blu ray, also make the xbox720 to handle a large memory on one disc.( general upgrard for both console) thanks

@loko mani Qoute “we dont need blu ray, also make the xbox720 to handle a large memory on one disc” arr…I think your comment is self contradicting, you want large space for memory on one disc but you don’t want Blu Ray that as large space on one disc?

  • Miguel Rodriguez

doesn’t mean he wants blue ray maybe just upgrade the dvd to support more storage.

  • Xavier Lerome Langham

now think real hard about your statement and how foolish it was, with that being said either blue-ray or digital anything els would be a waste of time

The largest hindrance for cross platform play is that Microsoft is afraid that Xbox Live subscribers will get the idea that they can get essentially the same experience on PS3 for free. M$ also implements a “total control policy” over everything related to their console. Ever wondered why the makers of Internet Explorer are the only console company without a web browser? It’s because they can’t control the internet without censoring it, and they know how much flak they would receive for doing so. It’s also why their Hulu app came months after Sony’s; M$ employees had to ensure they could control everything about it.

I want to see much better graphic’s basically the same as what pc’s are capable of now.

Blu-Ray support so that developers can finally make larger games giving us even better gameplay and longer single player games.

Keyboard and Mouse support out of the box so that people have the choice to use them instead of the awful controllers or using adaptor’s to get it to work.

Cross platform gaming so I can beat people on the xbox or playstation when gaming on my pc, or xbox or playstation just to prove it’s not the console that makes the player it’s the player that makes the player.

The abillity to swap out storage hard drives, maybe put a small 60gb drive in the console to store the OS on it, and then allow the use of larger hard drives so games can be installed on them and then all you do is switch the hard drive to play a different game, which worked on the original Xbox when it was chipped and used a different OS.

Make faster as well nothing worse than having to leave a playstation for 40 minutes while it install’s a game, and then only to find it need’s a update that takes another hour to download and a further 20 minutes to install it.

Better servers allowing for faster download speed’s of games and add on’s considering I have, currently a 50mb connection and I get a maximum speed of 1mb when downloading a game from the Xbox live marketplace but I get, 20mb when downloading from the Playstation store and on my pc I get 50mb.

Simply put make a pc smaller and use that much better for gaming and everything else that people would want it to do, than a console.

I think if the Sony console (I’m not going to call in the PS4 yet) gets out next year, it may have a head start on the Microsoft console (we don’t know that it’s 720 yet). Two of the main reasons the Xbox 360 has more sales is because the Xbox 360 got about a year’s head start and it was cheaper. It wasn’t because it was a superior console (which in many ways it wasn’t, but we’ll get to that later), it was because it had such a huge advantage. Sony needs to do a few things to pick up the Xbox 360 crowd. They need to make Playstation Network better (and keep it free), and they should put headsets in every package. People enjoy Xbox Live more because almost everyone has a headset, on PSN headsets are rare. I think that once again the Xbox will come out without Blu-Ray and here’s why. Sony will pay whatever amount of money it takes to ensure the makers of Blu-Ray don’t put it in the Microsoft console as well. It’s a HUGE advantage that the Sony console will have, especially as games become even larger as they already are. As your friend is putting his fourth disk in for Gears of War 5, you’ll be seeing Uncharted in perfect clarity on a Blu-Ray disk. That is an advantage Sony cannot and will not give up.

I agree, if they make the console without Blu-Ray it won’t be viable because DVD disks can’t hold even close to the amount a Blu-Ray can. If it doesn’t have Blu-Ray, you will see a lot of multi-disk games, or developers will have to make sacrifices with graphics quality.

MS could go the Nintendo WIi U route and use a proprietary disc format that holds as much, if not more, than Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray medium, for movies, is going to be defunct in a few years. It really hasn’t become the standard that DVD is and was, and probably never will because of On Demand becoming more and more viable. Blu-ray is an added plus, not an advantage. I’m sure MS will create a more robust On Demand service for all of their media and games. We are also looking at full Windows 8 & Kinect integration. Sony can’t really compete with them on those fronts… but I am sure Sony will come hard with their own network revisions and focus on the PS Plus service to increase their revenues so that they can further support such services. Sony learned late in the game that a two tiered model was more business savvy. I think it is without a doubt that the two systems will be very powerful, and comparable, but not the same leap as we saw before. Direct X 11 is an advantage for the Xbox, Sony will still be using the outdated Open GL APIs…. but they may develop their own tools as well. The other factor may be new rendering techninques for which the graphics cards may be capable of, such as point cloud data and voxels/atoms that could definitely achieve “Avatar” like graphics with lower power if the tech is right. I expect the next Xbox out in late 2012 and the PS4 to be out mid to late 2013, unless Sony really steps on the gas to not give MS such a head start this time.

I personally believe that the cross platforming of the PS4 and Xbox 720 would be a very great idea because both sony fans and microsoft fans can finally get the chance to battle each other online an prove which is badder and alot more, if this idea is implemented I know that everyone will enjoy it.I’ve always wanted to play Xbox live gamers on my PS3 because I’m a sony fan an I love to challenge other gamers from across the, so sony and microsoft, make the cross platforming compatible with PS4 and Xbox 720.You wont regret at all.I also want sony to make a full motion system for their new console so that players can get the real feel of motion gaming, your doing a good job sony, you just need to fix a few little things, discovery new things to make GAMING much more entertaining and you’ll always be on top(I’m a big fan of sony). As for microsoft, you need to fix alot of things. you need to have an internet brower so that everyone with internet access can sign into Xbox live, dont leave out the internet brower again, you need to make online gaming FREE!!! because alot of persons have deserted your console because they have to pay to play an these are hard financial times we’re facing right now so people do not have the money to spend to play online so you need to make FREE!!! online gaming, I give you guys a thumbs up for the kinect, I really like it. make the chargeable usb’s be able to transfer data so that we can use it to connect to the computer an use it because I do not have access to the wireless adapter that you sell and I really want to use my controller on my computer so please fix that, well thats all for now but as time progresses I’ll come up with more ideas.

    1. Ditch the HDD and go straight to SSD’s

    2. Make it possible to easily open the machine once in a while to clean dust and dirt out of fans and heat sinks once in a while with out killing the warranty.

The DVD is maxed out as it is.

The graphic’s quality of games are already being dropped because of the lack of space on the DVD Disc’s, and also because of the hardware aswell.
