For those of you who aren’t aware, it’s Sonic the Hedgehog’s birthday today and social networking is celebrating it in different ways. Twitter is flowing with messages for the speedy computer game character made by Sega as is Facebook.

Sonic was a character created to combat Nintendo’s Super Mario who at the time was hugely successful and still is to this day. Sonic the Hedgehog started out life back in 1991 and has become a mascot for Sega as well as in a well known character in the gaming world.

He started off on the Megadrive or as it was known in the US the Genesis and even after his introduction Nintendo and their little chunky Italian plumber carried on to dominate and as informed by bbc.co.uk’s Dave Lee Nintendo held 92 percent of the home gaming market.

After careful consideration and a few attempts of different characters such as dogs, rabbits and even an armadillo Sonic became the choice and then was launched. The first game was launched on June 23rd 1991 and sold 15 million copies of the game turning the market share into the favor of Sega with 65 percent of it. Following on from that we have seen all sorts of games launched on various consoles.

There were also rumors of connections between Michael Jackson, Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog from the game music down the buckles on his sneakers. Check out the video at the bottom of the article which shows some incredibly close musical similarities. You can check out his full history on this link.
