Samsung Galaxy S2 US Release Roundup: Coming Soon
We’ve been keeping you informed about the Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II) for as long as we can remember it seems. We’ve answered many questions about this handset and reported all the news and also speculation but what many people still want to know about the most, is a U.S release date. We thought we’d put together all we know so far and what has been rumored, in a Galaxy S2 US release roundup to get you up to speed.
Just at the weekend we took a look at the Galaxy S2 against the HTC Sensation 4G with a video comparison and also advised readers who are already lucky enough to have the Galaxy S2 how to get the most out of it. OSM’s Maddy Rowe also posted a retailer roundup a short while ago, which detailed countries and retailers where the Galaxy S2 was already available, such as South Korea and the UK and you may also be interested in our Galaxy S2 review roundup. We’ll tell you what we know so far by rounding up our previous US release articles so click on the links for more detail on any particular aspects.
One of the first times we mentioned a US release was in our article back at the beginning of May when we told how AT&T may be the first US carrier to get the Galaxy S2 as the handset had passed through the FCC. We also told readers when the unlocked version of the Galaxy S2 became available to order on Amazon US, for those who didn’t want to wait for a carrier release. In another article we then gave details of the various names that the Galaxy S2 might be released under in the U.S., the Within on Sprint, the Function on Verizon and the Attain on AT&T. There was also news of T-Mobile possibly being another carrier although we have found no further confirmation of that yet.
The first signs we had of a US release next month was a release rumor for Sprint from an anonymous Sprint “insider” who said that the Within would be coming in late July. We then had a similar rumor for a release of the Function on Verizon, also for July, although the source of this story later backtracked and said they were referring to another product. However it still seems to be being widely reported that the Verizon version of the Galaxy S2 is likely to be released in July.
More recently we told how the Attain for AT&T had now been spotted on the Samsung US Facebook page and the image available showed some slight differences for the AT&T version of the Galaxy S2. We noted that the fact that an AT&T branded handset had been photographed indicated that a release was closer. We then heard more news about the Sprint release of the Galaxy S2 as several Sprint employees let slip a July 24 release date. Although of course this is conjecture, the source of this story has previously given reliable information and other signs indicate this release date could be accurate. The last information we had for the US release was that cases for the Galaxy S2 have now been spotted at a major retailer. Amazon has listed cases for the “Samsung Galaxy S2/Attain/Within/Function so it certainly looks as though it will be here sooner rather than later and with the names and carriers that we thought.
You may also be interested in release details so far for Canada where it looks as though they could possibly get the S2 first for North America. We informed how the Galaxy S2 there is likely to be carried by Bell, Rogers and TELUS. Again the likely release is next month and a “coming soon” site now shows on the Galaxy S2 Samsung Canada site. Our most recent article about this is about how Canadian carrier SaskTel has announced via Twitter that it will be selling the Galaxy S2 from next month.
All-in-all then, although we concede that much of the information out there is based on rumors rather than fact, there’s an awful lot to suggest the Galaxy S2 will appear in the US and Canada next month. In fact we’d be pretty amazed if the Galaxy S2 doesn’t now arrive in July. Are you waiting for the Galaxy S2 in North America? How much longer are you prepared to wait?
