Sony S1 & S2 Tablets: Pre-Order With Release Date News?

June 16, 2021 | Maddy Rowe

Its a job to know where to start when looking for a new smartphone or tablet device, lets face it the list is as long as both of our arms. No doubt its fair to say that Apple are renowned for their iPhone and iPad devices and since bot of their arrivals, competition has started to build.

Back in February we announced some fresh news in relation to two new tablets from tech giants Sony. Tablets named the S1 and S2 were officially announced with snippets of information surrounding their specs, but at the time we had no release date.

That may be about to change according to Engadget. Brian Heater has reported that both Android tablets may be ready to pre-order as early as August with a release date set in September. The news comes from a individual(s) from Sony’s Marketing Group which highlights that an “unnamed” tablet(s) will launch tail end of September and will be available from Sony Direct and UK’s John Lewis.

Other retailers will then be able to retail the device(s) sometime after Christmas, which may not be the wisest of moves, surely a Christmas release is just what Sony need, especially after the last few months with the PSN outage followed by other hacking attacks.

Is it fair to say that the two tablets will be stiff competition for the Apple iPad 2? Rumored specs for the S1 tablet include a 9.4-inch single screen, Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 2 cameras, may be used as a remote for Sony gear and so on.

The S2 on the other-hand will consist of a dual-screen possible clamshell design with 5.5-inch displays, Tegra 2 SoC with one camera, WiFi, 3G and 4G connectivity and so on. In terms of price its difficult to gauge what both devices will cost but when we initially looked at them in April, the S1 was rumored to be in the region of $599 with the S2 at $699.

What are your thoughts on the two new Sony tablets? Would you be tempted, realistically what would you be willing to pay? Have they got any hope against other rivals such as the iPad 2?
