The Apple iPhone 5 is as much talked-about as ever, despite its non-appearance at WWDC this week and we’ve been giving you all the news and speculation about when it may be released. We have now heard that the iPhone 4S (instead of 5), which has been mentioned as being released next, may actually be a Sprint and T-Mobile variant of the iPhone 4.
There’s been a certain amount of confusion over whether the next iPhone would be called the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 so bear with me as I try to explain. A short while ago OSM’s Tim Ollason gave some clarification of the two iPhone models we were hearing of, a 4S this year with an iPhone 5 next year. We then heard reports that the next iPhone (whatever it was to be called), looked to be set for release around September. When we then looked at the odds for an iPhone 4S unveiling at WWDC we noted a report that felt the iPhone 4S did not exist and was just a concept or an iPhone 4 with a new processor handed out to developers by Apple to test new apps.
After the iPhone no-show on Monday we then looked at the likely release date again bearing in mind all the available facts and speculation and concluded that it was still likely to arrive around September. We also discussed possible pricing and then earlier today we heard reports that the beta version of iOS 5 given to developers contains hints of two new iPad 3 versions along with two iPhone models. As the public release of iOS 5 is due in the fall this tied in nicely with at least one new iPhone arriving around the same time.
Today we have heard that an iPhone for Sprint is currently in advanced testing, according to Mark Gurman over on 9to5Mac. A while ago we spoke of how damaging it might be for Sprint if it remained one of the only carriers without the Apple iPhone and then later discussed the first reports that the next iPhone could be called the iPhone 4S and may come to Sprint and T-Mobile. It seems as though those rumors are now strengthened then by this latest news of a Sprint iPhone being tested. 9to5Mac tells how the physical appearance of the Sprint iPhone is similar to the current iPhone 4 and therefore the iPhone 4S that’s being widely discussed may in fact simply be the Sprint variant rather than a completely new phone.
The report also states that a 4G iPhone may also come to Sprint but that the Sprint iPhone being tested right now is not 4G. As well as the 9to5Mac sources another report on Talk Android suggests that the iPhone 4S is an iPhone not only for Sprint but also T-Mobile, although this is also unconfirmed.
It’s certainly interesting news, especially for Sprint customers and for those using T-Mobile too and this would explain more about the mythical iPhone 4S and makes a certain amount of sense, although of course for now we’ll just have to wait and see. Are you a Sprint customer happy to hear the iPhone may be coming to your network? What do you think of the likelihood of a fall release? Let us know with your comments.
