Is YouTube Losing Its Purpose?

May 20, 2022 | Matt Tran

Back in 2005 when YouTube was born, it was made with the simple purpose of having users record themselves and “broadcast” it. All sorts of crazy content has been uploaded over the years, but is YouTube now in danger of losing its identity?

It is giant corporations who are uploading large amounts of content to the site, getting millions of viewings rather than home made videos. Previously the typical home made video which would go viral was a cat sneezing or a baby laughing, but now it is all about the big music videos, celebrities and TV shows, according to BBC News.

There is nothing wrong with this as long as the YouTube community are happy with it, but we do not want to see YouTube being controlled by corporations who have partnerships with Google, whose main priority could be revenue. The success and power of YouTube should be firmly in the hands of its members and viewers who make and upload the content.

Google bought YouTube in 2006 and it has been nothing but a success since, so you could say that by introducing these partnerships with the likes of Vevo, BBC, CBS and Hulu, has greatly benefited the site. If you use YouTube and are a part of the community then let us know your thoughts on this. Is the site becoming swamped with corporate videos and advertisements?
