Apple iPhone 5 With No iOS 5.0 Rumor: Changing Tactics

March 27, 2022 | Debbie Turner

Here at OSM we recently published an article which was a roundup about the iPhone 5 with speculation and questions, and one of the points we mentioned was what the new operating system iOS 5.0 would feature and give to the next iPhone. However we’ve heard news today that very untypically, the new iPhone 5 might not have iOS 5.0 on release and this would seem to indicate changing tactics at Apple.

The iPhone 5 is of course, like any Apple product, under intense scrutiny and every day we hear more rumors and speculation, but one thing that most expected was that the next-generation iPhone would be shipped running iOS 5.0. However David Murphy over on PCMag, sourced from Tech Crunch, tells us that iOS 5.0 may not be released until the fall according to two “solid sources” and that, if true, this is a really “unorthodox” move for Apple. Most feel that the new iPhone will be released in June or July, at around the same time as previous iPhone releases.

Many people had been wondering why we’d heard nothing about iOS 5.0 yet, indeed there had been many reports that we might be hearing news of the new operating system at the same Apple event that saw the launch of the iPad 2 at the beginning of the month. However if the release of iOS 5.0 is not coming until the fall then we’re unlikely to hear anything official about it until WWDC in June, which is when we would expect the official launch of the iPhone 5. So, if the iPhone 5 is released around the time it is expected, it will veer away from the usual pattern of the next iOS being released at the same time as a new iPhone.

We previously wrote about rumors that the iPhone 5 itself may be pushed back to the fall but this was more to do with the fact that Apple might want to leave more of a gap between the Verizon iPhone that was finally released in February, and a new iPhone. Most tech sites though, seem to think that the iPhone 5 will still be released in the summer as usual.

Chris Smith over on TFTS also comments about the possibility of iOS 5.0 being pushed back to the fall and notes they expect some talk of iOS 5.0 at WWDC in June but that the release would not be till later on. TFTS points out that iOS 4.0 was unveiled in April 2010, and released at the same time as the iPhone 4 in June, so if the new iPhone and operating system were to be released concurrently we would have expected to have heard more about iOS 5 by now.

There is also talk that iOS 5.0 will be released at the same time as another iPad instead. We have heard rumors before of another iPad release and this would fit with those rumors about an iPad 3 appearing later this year. Increasingly, it does appear that the iPhone 5 is not likely to appear running iOS 5.0. What are your thoughts on this news? If iOS 5.0 is delayed until the fall, are you still expecting the iPhone 5 this summer, or do you think that might be pushed back too? Let us know with your comments.

Surely the entire point of buying an iPhone 5 is for the new operating system. As shallow a culture as we are, I would doubt many people would purchase a new iPhone with the same system as an iPhone 4 when they could just wait a couple more months to get the fancy new one. If this is the case I would expect to see Apple push back the release of the iPhone altogether. However, they want to make money and people are stupid so who knows.
