iPad 2 Smart Cover Accessory: Revolutionary - Not a Case

Here at OSM we’ve been bringing you all the news from the Apple event where we have seen the iPad 2 unveiled at last. We’ve already brought you news on the release date, prices and specs, missing features and the fact that there will also be a white iPad 2 version. Now we wanted to give you news about the Smart Cover.

This is a new accessory and we think Steve Jobs himself best explained it when he said, “We designed the case right alongside the product. It’s not a case — it’s a cover,” according to Vlad Savov over on Engadget. The Smart Cover is like a flexible flap that uses a magnetic hinge to attach to the iPad 2 and also aligns it. The cover will also wake the device from sleep when you snap it open, and put it to sleep when closed again and you can see a video of this clever cover in action below this story. We defy you not to want one when you’ve seen the video.

Another feature is that the Smart Cover can be used as a stand for the iPad 2, either for standing it upright or at the right angle for typing, and what’s more it even cleans the screen when you open up the cover using its microfiber lining. You even have a choice of bright colors and finishes for the Smart Cover so you can choose one to suit your mood. There are five covers available in polyurethane (costing $39 each) and five in Italian leather ($69 each).

You can see much more about the Apple iPad Smart Cover at apple.com here. To be honest we’re nearly as excited about the Smart Cover as with the iPad 2 itself as it’s pretty neat and if you’re paying out for an iPad 2 you may as well treat yourself to a Smart Cover or two. I hate it when my toys get scratched. The old case offered all of the functionality of the cover, and did a great job of protecting the iPad. The Smart Cover won't protect anything, and as a result, I'll be skipping it and the new iPad. I'll probably buy a backup case for my current iPad, however, as I may have it for a while.
