New MacBook Pro 2011: FaceTime HD Camera & App Now

February 24, 2022 | Debbie Turner

Today, as we previously speculated, we saw the release of the new MacBook Pro 2011 lineup. We’ve already brought you news of the full range and prices, and also the confirmation of the new Light Peak or Thunderbolt technology being used as well as a hands-on experience. However we now wanted to look more closely at another new feature, that of FaceTime HD.

Earlier on we talked about the leaked news that this would be coming to the new MacBook Pro line and speculated on whether we might now see FaceTime HD on the new iPhone 5 and also the iPad 2. Joanna Stern over on Engadget, sourced from Apple, looks at the new MacBook Pros and notes that the new HD camera for these notebooks now has three times the resolution of the camera on the older versions, enabling FaceTime video chat in HD.

Although FaceTime video chat already exists there have been some criticisms about the quality of the video offered and so the new FaceTime HD, which offers 720p video, will be a real advance for the 2011 MacBook Pro refresh. The FaceTime App for Macs is now available in the Mac App Store here for $0.99 for any Mac with a FaceTime camera though FaceTime HD is available only for certain Intel-based Macs, such as the new MacBook Pro range released today.

Once you have the hardware and the app (for Macs) the FaceTime video feature offers picture-in-picture viewing and all you need to set it up is your Apple ID and e-mail address. To call somebody users just need to find their contact from the Address Book and click on the phone number if calling somebody with an iPhone 4, or click the e-mail address if calling their Mac or iPod Touch, whereby an invitation will show on that persons screen for them to accept. Simple! There’s a lot more information on the new FaceTime HD feature at here, so take a look for more detail.

What are your thoughts on FaceTime HD coming to the new line of MacBook Pros? Do you think we’ll also see it soon on the next-generation iPhone and iPad? Let us know by sending us your comments using the box below.

Apple's Led Cinema display 27 inch does not have a FaceTime HD camera, so connecting to the new MacBook Pro 2011 (with FaceTime HD camera) will not be compatible.
When will Apple update the Cinema LED display 27 with a FaceTime HD camera?
