iPad 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 2: Rumors talk

We’ve posted many articles lately about the iPad 2, our most recent being about the rumored release date and also NFC capabilities. Two days ago we also told about the possible reveal of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 at MWC 2011 next month, following the reveal of a teaser video although it has not yet been ascertained if the video was genuine.

The leaked video gave some details of specs for the next Galaxy Tab and we recently gave a rumor roundup about specs for the iPad 2. Now we’re wondering, taking these into consideration, if the Galaxy Tab 2 can take on the iPad 2 and which one will be the better device.

The rumored specs of the Galaxy Tab 2 are certainly impressive so let’s take a look at how the 2 devices may compare. If we look at the display it’s said to have a 2048×1200 resolution while the iPad 2 has a speculated resolution of 2054×1536, according to Carl Bagh over on International Business Times. The Galaxy Tab 2 is said to have the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and may also have a 3D Display which would be impressive and that comes up against the iPad improvement whereby the iPad 2 could have a new Apple A5 dual-core Cortex-A9 chip. The iPad 2 is also said to support 1080p video and SGX543 graphics support as opposed to the SGX535 on the current iPad.

As far as operating systems go the Galaxy Tab is of course an Android device and will launch running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but will then be upgradeable to Android 3.0 Honeycomb, an OS especially designed for tablets while the iPad 2 will use Apple’s own iOS. An area where the iPad could fall short is on the expected camera details of a 1-megapixel rear camera and 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera. In contrast reports on the Galaxy Tab 2 predict an 8-megapixel rear camera with a 3-megapixel front-facing camera.

Other reported features are an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and compass for the Galaxy Tab 2 while the iPad 2 will have an accelerometer, gyroscope and proximity. You may also be interested in an article over on Device Mag by Shawn Wagnon which speculates about the 3D display on the Galaxy Tab 2 and asks if this could give Samsung the edge in the tablet battle and also gives verdicts on the other rumored specs.

Of course this is all based on so-far unconfirmed details but with neither of these devices actually out yet, that’s all we can do for now. Still, even if only some of these specs are confirmed it gives us some idea of what to expect. Hopefully we may hear more about the Galaxy Tab 2 at MWC next month. Based on what you’ve heard so far do you think the Galaxy Tab 2 can give the iPad 2 a run for its money? We’d like to hear your thoughts on this so please do send us your comments.

3D sucks. It's just a glorified version of HD. I'll be impressed when they announce a holographic display.
