Facebook Shutting Down March 15?: Don’t believe a word of it

We’ve heard some crazy rumors in our time here at OSM but possibly the most unbelievable we’ve heard so far is the one that’s going viral across the internet right now which says that Facebook, the popular social networking site, is shutting down. Not only that but the rumors also state a date of March 15.

Now, call me stupid but I’m prepared to stick my neck on the line here and say this is rumor and simply that. Not for one moment do I believe it but I can tell you more about the rumor that’s sweeping the globe and worrying an awful lot of people who are working themselves up into rather a frenzy about it. Google Trends is seeing big mentions of Facebook shutting down and it’s also causing Twitter mayhem as the rumor says fairly emphatically that Facebook is not merely temporarily halted or undergoing maintenance, but completely ending once and for all.

Over on The Huffington Post, Craig Kannalley reports some of the reaction going on at Twitter and Facebook where a group to stop the closing down has already been set up. It’s possible that the rumors started with an amalgamation of things that got confused and made people add up one and one to make three. Firstly Yahoo announced that Yahoo Video was to cease the upload of videos on March 15 so that may be where the date comes from. Secondly a recent CNN blog post reporting on the Goldman Sachs investment into Facebook said it could be “the beginning of the end”

Samyuktha Krishnappa over on International Business Times goes one further and tells us that rumors started from reports on a blog saying that Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, gave a press conference and allegedly said, “Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.” Another report says that Zuckerberg said in a phone call, “I personally don’t think it’s a big deal. And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends.”

The same blog spot also said that the Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook, Avrat Humarthi, asserted that the site was to close down on March 15 and so people should remove their photographs from the site. Please don’t believe any of this as we know some people are genuinely worried about it. We should also point out that none of the mainstream news or tech sites have reported on this yet and they surely would have been the first to know if there was any truth to it.

Our advice here at OSM is not to believe any of these rumors and if it does turn out to be true I will personally eat my hat (not that I have one). Have you any thoughts on this rumor to share with us? If so please do send in your comments as we’d love to know what you think about this.

Sounds similar to a rumor we heard in 1999 when the sky was supposed to fall on December 31, 2021 at Midnight. Mayhem ensued, people freaked out, and the pfft, it was 2000 and everyone was still here. Hmmm, and we're still here years later. If Facebook closes down, a lot of revenue would go down the drain too. Maybe the way we use Facebook today will change after March 15th, but I'm willing to buy a hat to bet on the fact that it will be around long after March 15th. IMHO.

Oh yeah, isn't the world supposed to end in 2012 too? Oh wait, they changed that…nevermind.

I wish and hope it isn't just a rumor at all … they most stupids site I've ever seen and they really don't care about copyrights personal data from individuals, and give them away to 3rd parties.
Since Facebook is not doing either of these (and is in fact heading rapidly in the other direction), I’m no longer interested in a presence of any type on the site. If a company doesn’t consider information sustainability in their designs, they are not creating any long term value for humanity.
