Online social networking site “Twitter,” was inundated yesterday and subsequently after, with tweets of sorrow and tributes on news of “Captain Beefheart” a.k.a. Don Van Vliet, who passed away at the age of 69.

Magic Band leader along with his fellow group members, were big between 1965 and 1982 and had successfully recorded 12 studio albums, and not only will he be remembered for his extraordinary voice singing a mixture of blues, rock, free jazz and so on, but of his musical abilities playing wind instruments.

Tweets of sadness and recognition for the star came from friend Frank Zappa who said, “Just heard about Captain Beefheart. Sad day indeed.” Another as MTV reported, was from Comedian Penn Jillette tweeting, “Captain Beefheart has died. Another inspiration & hero gone. He’s been painting, no music for a while, but I still listen all the time.”

Over at NME.com, they reported on tweets sent from Frank Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos who said, “He very much influenced” his own band, whilst Billy Bragg said, “There was only ever one Captain Beefheart.”
