Social networking site Twitter has been a centrepiece for tributes to former Arrows Formula One boss Tom Walkinshaw.
Mark Blundell, ex F1 and Le Mans driver tweeted, “Just heard that Tom Walkinshaw passed away today, great loss to the world of motorsport, good driver and team owner, RIP.”
Walkinshaw chairman of Gloucester rugby club, unfortunately lost his battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 64. Reuters reported that a spokesman from the club confirmed there would likely be an announcement made on Monday morning.
Motorsport reporters Autosport, remembered how Walkinshaw enjoyed great success at the world famous 24 Hour Le Mans under the TWR Jaguar banner, winning in 1988 and again 1990. From here he moved on to become director of engineering with Ross Brawn an F1 legends Benetton.
Walkinshaw stamped his name in the world of F1 when he helped sign a young talent by the name of Michael Schumacher in 1991. He also played a part in Damon Hill’s world championship titles with Williams, before Tom moved on to Arrows in 1996.
For followers of F1 motorsport Tom Walkinshaw was truly an icon and will be sadly missed. Give us your memories or a thought from the great mans life.
