LinkedIn Member Growth: Separate Professional From Personal

Career-focused social networking website LinkedIn – which debuted online back in 2003 - is becoming more and more popular these days. In fact, by the time you had finished reading the first sentence; five more people had probably created accounts.

According to Molly McHugh over at, Jeff Weiner – the CEO of LinkedIn – recently revealed that the site is actually registering a new member every second. A million new member accounts have been created, just within the last nine days.

Speaking at the recent Web 2.0 Summit, Weiner said that LinkedIn’s success is thanks to its differences to other social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. While sites such as Facebook and Twitter are more related to personal, LinkedIn is more professional.

“LinkedIn is simply a professional network,” Weiner said when asked questions about being compared to Twitter and Facebook. The ever increasing numbers prove that people want to separate their professional social networking from their personal.
