Not only has the 3D Xbox Kinect Camera already been hacked but now it has now been turned into a 3D video camera. How cool is that?! It makes you wonder what these people do for a living that they can hack into things so quickly, where do they find the time?

As we all know, Microsoft do not condone and modifications of their products so should YouTube videos showing modifications be removed? So what is Microsoft going to do to prevent different modifications happening to their products? Can they do anything about it? One company spokesperson said “Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering and we will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant.”

Onto the camera mod, how does it work? Well data from both cameras gets merged together to create a 3D model, the different cameras look at depth video stream and photographic video stream. Interesting stuff, so if you want to read more about how this has happened then head across to TGDaily to see more here.

The point is, that the hardware was not modified. It was added software. Software which allows to use the device with other with the wiimote from Nintendo. Nintendo is the more cool company. They allow (tolerate) to use there hardware in different ways. Nintendo is the company which let the buyers play with the toys they build. Microsoft on the other hand…. It's like: "Only have fun with it the way I allow you to." Kinect is designed to have fun with it! I hope MS do the right thing and tolerate those "hacking" like Nintendo do. Otherwise MS lose more and more sympathy. Being creative is the way how technology evolves. Working against this principle is bad for researchers, bad for the economy, and bad for the future of technology.
