RIM Announce BlackBerry PlayBook To Retail At Under $500

We have spoken before about RIM’s offering into the tablet market, giving specs that had become available. The question was if it would be priced competitively enough to offer an alternative to the latest releases from the likes of Samsung.

Today however, Engadget got the news that Jim Balsillie, CEO at RIM had at last announced that their PlayBook would be “Very competitively priced,” he also indicated that it would carry a sub $500 price tag.

Due to land on the shelves in North America the first quarter of 2011, it will find it’s way worldwide within Q2.

If the pricing is correct we should see the 7-inch PlayBook going head to head with Apple’s WiFi 16GB iPad. Although the BlackBerry will loss the screen size challenge to iPad’s 9.7-inches, it will match Samsung’s 7-inch Galaxy 3G Tab, and beat it on price. Verizon are releasing the Galaxy Tab on sale tomorrow for $599.99.

The only problem is that by the time BlackBerry’s PlayBook hits the shops, the increase in the popular tablet devices will have evolved even further. Lets just hope that BlackBerry has accounted for this and the Playbook is not lost in a sea of tablets.
