New York Marathon 2010: Entrants to live-tweet during run

This Sunday November 7 sees the ING New York Marathon 2010 and the race will see thousands of runners taking part in one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. Now we know how popular Twitter is with people using it for good things like happy announcements and also for the odd rant, but what would you think of runners tweeting live during the event itself?

According to Julie Shapiro over on DNAInfo many of the runners on Sunday have been tweeting in the lead-up to the marathon and it seems that many intend to tweet live on Sunday. Take Jennifer Gerlock from Maryland for example who says, “It doesn’t take too much to tweet out a picture. You have to stop for water breaks anyway, so why not?” Another runner will be Kristin Shiller aged 25, running a marathon for the first time who plans to tweet up to the start of the race and will be carrying her phone in an armband.

However the social media manager for the New York Road Runners, Sean Haubert, points out that although the community using Twitter in the lead-up to the race has been encouraged, he “highly discourages it” during racing itself because of safety concerns. He has heard though of several people who have mentioned they may live-tweet.

For more on this go to What do you think of live-tweeting during a Marathon? Maybe you think it’s a good idea for inspiration or perhaps you agree with Haubert that it could lead to accidents? We’d be interested to know what you think so why not send us a comment.
