Xbox 360 Kinect: Sitting / Lying Down Problems Eradicated

Just under two weeks ago the manual for the Microsoft Kinect for the Xbox 360 was leaked, which revealed potential distance problems. Since then there has been the worry that the motion sensor would not be able to track those sitting or lying down, thankfully this issue has now been eradicated.

Microsoft managed to solve the issue by way of an update to the software, so now you can be as lazy as you like while playing games. The Kinect had trouble if a player was lying down, as it could not get the correct base node setting. This was the same when sitting down, as the players knees were higher than the pelvis.

According to Eurogamer, Microsoft made changes to the software, the base node is no longer on the base of the spine but on the back of the neck instead. The end results is that the system should no longer get confused, so you can sit down and move your hands and arms – this could be ideal for driving games.

Having been to the recent Eurogamer Expo 2010 I have seen Kinect in action, and I have to say was blown away at how responsive it is. OK, so we know that things are not perfect, but with a few more updates and more games the future certainly looks good for the system.

For all of those who said that Kinect will not be able to compete with PlayStation Move, I would say that it is too early to tell – let the games begin.
