Twitter Wants To Match Facebook’s 1 Billion Users

In a bid to cement themselves at the top alongside Facebook, Twitter’s CEO “Evan Williams” has said that the site is hoping to equal user figures of 1 billion through businesses advertising. If this can be achieved, Twitter, the third-largest social networking site will establish a level pegging with rivals Facebook.

According to Douglas at Bloomberg, Twitter sees an astonishing 100 million short messages sent daily, and attracts users from the everyday person through to celebrities. Since the sites collaboration with retail brands such as Starbucks Corp, ESPN, Nike Inc, Best Buy Co and Coca-Cola, Twitter are hoping to expand their advertising and marketing to other companies. Head of Internet Research at CLSA Ltd in Hong Kong “Elinor Leung” has said, “Twitter now is starting to try different types of monetizing methods. It’s the same as YouTube. They have a lot of traffic, and a lot of people using it, but it’s not easy to monetize because you don’t know who’s watching.”

By advertising the brand names next to Twitter’s search results and hot new topics, big companies are now being viewed in an instant with a click of the mouse. It starts the ball rolling, by the user looking at possible offers and discounts which can result in increased revenue for the businesses. As well as big brand retailers, Twitter will be offering the smaller companies a chance to put their name forward.

We reported only last month of a redesign to Twitter’s site, with easy accessibility to post photos, video and maps straight onto the page. It is hoped that businesses will also get the benefit from this when using multimedia content.
