Twitter: Bigger than MySpace and catching up on Facebook

Microblogging service Twitter is now officially getting more traffic and monthly visitors than MySpace it has been revealed. According to Mashable and numbers from marketing research firm comScore. Twitter has just leaped over the head of MySpace with 96 million users versus 95 million.

However if you look at the bigger picture, MySpace has been around far longer, which makes Twitter’s achievement more impressive. In the last year between August 2009-2010, Twitter has grown by 76%; where MySpace has actually dropped by 17%, largely due to the increasing popularity and rising number of Tweeters and Facebookers.

Facebook and Twitter have established themselves as the worlds 2 biggest social sites and continue in their quest for superiority as they update their services regularly. When the 2 sites go head to head Facebook still does stand much taller with almost 600 million monthly unique users. However Twitter grew more in the last year with Facebook growing only 54% compared to Twitter’s 76%.

Although Facebook is still top dog, Twitter has significantly closed the gap between their rivals. It will be interesting to see the figures for the next year. As for MySpace unfortunately, they become more unpopular each day with a social networking extinction on the cards. Facebook killed Bebo, are MySpace heading the same way?
