Star Wars movies in 3D – One a year from 2012

If you’re an avid Star Wars fan you’ve probably already heard about the R2-D2 edition of the Motorola Droid 2 phone, due out tomorrow. We also gave you an article recently about Social Media and the Star Wars community. Now we have new and exciting news though as it seems that the Star Wars movies will be re-released as 3D versions.

An Engadget report by Richard Lawler, sourced from The Hollywood Reporter, gives the news that although rather surprisingly the franchise has not been restored for Blu-ray yet, (these should be coming next year), that George Lucas does intend to issue the movies in 3D conversions at the rate of one every year, starting in 2012.

The films will come out in numerical order, so the first 3D movie will be Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, issued by Fox as with the original movies. Apparently Lucas was inspired to go for the 3D versions by the release of Avatar, plus the fact that by the time the Star Wars 3D movies are out more homes and theatres than ever before will have 3D equipment.

For more on this go to What do you think of the plans for Star Wars 3D movies? Will you be standing in line to purchase the first one on its day of release? We’re interested to hear your thoughts on this so please send in your comments.
