Facebook is a hero: Used to catch criminal gang

The Newcastle based crime gang “the NE2 crew” have all been caught and jailed by police after targeting a student house in Heaton and also robbing a junior doctor by holding them all up at gunpoint.

The gang of 5, aged between 16 and 19 broke into the property and threatened the occupants with a fake realistic looking firearm. After the gang had ransacked the residents, they boasted of their achievement on social networking site Facebook, which was a fatal mistake as it led it their capture. Before being sentenced they were called “cowards” by the judge, according to BBC Tyneside.

The crew had all uploaded pictures of themselves with masks on brandishing the fake gun and also spoke of the crimes they had been committing. After being captured Detective Constable Kev Ashurst, from Northumbria Police issued a statement: “The investigation was complex and thorough and involved seizing and viewing mobile phone footage and looking into their use of the social networking site Facebook.”

Every member of the gang receiving jail time ranging from 3-6 years, with the youngest members receiving the most time surprisingly. It looks like we have just found another practical use for Facebook; a trap for idiotic criminals. What do you think of this story? Let us know your opinions in the comments.

  1. I can't help but laugh at the sheer stupidity of the gang.
