FarmVille and real farming compared – Infographic

Here at Online Social Media we do love a good infographic, a way of depicting data like statistics for example in a graphic form that’s easier to digest. A couple of infographic stories we’ve recently posted are one that showed social network use and another that displayed the history of Facebook privacy issues. Now we’ve found another infographic that compares the virtual farming game, FarmVille, with real-life farming.

The article by Shane Snow over on Mashable gives a great deal of fascinating information. For example if you take a look at the average player on FarmVille against the average real farmer, the FarmVille version averages out as a woman of 43, earning $50,000 + annually whereas the actual average farmer is a 57-year-old man earning $35,000 per year.

The top 5 FarmVille crops are strawberries, wheat, grapes, white grapes and rice as opposed to the top 5 real-life crops which are sugar cane, maize, wheat, rice and potatoes. Based on square feet of farmland FarmVille had 500 million acres farmed on in its first 15 months whereas in the U.S. alone the amount of farmland is 930 million acres.

Another difference that reflects the gender of the average virtual and real farmer is that on FarmVille 60% of farms are operated by women but only 13% of real farms are female-operated. There’s a lot more interesting information to take a look at on the infographic and to check it out go to mashable.com. Are you a FarmVille player? Are you anything close to the average age and gender of the average FarmVille gamer? We’d be really interested to hear what you think of the infographic and the information it depicts so please do send in your comments.
