Diaspora – open source alternative to Facebook coming September 15

The social networking giant Facebook, is about to face competition from a new social networking site called Diaspora, created by four students in New York as an open source alternative. Facebook has seen many privacy issues over the years since it was founded, so much so that the students decided to launch their own web service whereby individuals would be in control of their own information, sort of an anti-Facebook.

They began their idea with the aim of raising $10,000 by June 1 in order to spend their time in the summer developing the project, and managed to achieve that target in 12 days, according to Ben Parr over on Mashable. Fundraising has now passed the $100,000 mark and on an amusing and rather charming note, apparently even Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerburg, has contributed.

The students, Daniel Grippi, Maxwell Salzberg, Ilya Zhitomirskiy and Raphael Sofaer, believe that it should be possible to maintain personal privacy online and at the same time share information and came up with the idea of individuals having their own “seeds” within an expanded network but still being controlled by the user, according to Jenifer Van Grove on Mashable.

Now it seems that the Diaspora project is very much on track with the team saying, “We have Diaspora working, we like it, and it will be open sourced on September 15th.” So involved are the 4 students that the project has now been extended and Diaspora is seen as a long-term scheme.

It will certainly be interesting to see Diaspora’s arrival on September 15 and we can’t wait to see what the Diaspora team has managed. Maybe they’ll even be making a movie about Diaspora one day as they area now with Facebook. What do you think of Diaspora? We’d be interested to hear from and would welcome your comments.
