Disney Characters Future Social Media Gaming Experience

Social gaming is probably the fastest-growing division of the video gaming industry right now and it appears that Disney is keen to get in on the act. It’s been reported that Walt Disney Co., are in talks to buy Playdom Inc., a huge name in online social games.

The rise of online social gaming on networks such as Facebook means that figures of between $400 and $750 million are being bandied about by negotiators as the purchase price for Playdom. In 2007 Disney acquired Club Penguin, a kids virtual site, for $350 million and it has also recently purchased Tapulous Inc., an iPhone games developer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

By acquiring Playdom Inc., Disney’s push into the gaming industry would progress further and give them yet another platform on which to bring into play popular Disney characters and brands. Social gaming also takes in a broader demographic than console gaming on Xbox and PlayStation systems. Traditional video game sales have recently weakened whereas social gaming on the Internet and mobile phones is increasing.

Disney could draw on its classic characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, through to modern-day favourites such as Buzz Lightyear and Woody. A board meeting is being held next week by Playdom, to discuss the possible buyout. For more on this go to What sort of social games can you imagine with Disney characters?
