Twitter Trending Ads: Toy Story 3 Promotion

Last week there was a bit of speculation surrounding popular social networking website Twitter, and how they were experimenting with trending topics as ad space. And now it appears that it does seem to be the case, as part of “Promoted Tweets.”

If you are now wondering what exactly “Promoted Tweets” are, it’s the company’s new ad platform, which is aimed at increasing brands’ interaction with its fans, Jolie O’Dell at reports. Oh and of course, increasing Twitter’s revenue in the process.

When a user clicks on the Twitter trending ad, they are then directed to a search results page with the advertiser’s promoted tweet at the top of the page. In one case, the promoted trend was from the upcoming “Toy Story 3” movie, the first customer.

The promoted tweets for this ad included “To infinity and beyond! Toy Story 3 hits theaters Friday, June 18. Did you get your tickets yet?” However, Twitter COO Dick Costolo has insisted that the promoted tweets aren’t actually ads, but some think otherwise.

This is a fantastic way to let your fans connect with the brand. This is big news for marketers and will play a large role in creating brand experiences and encouraging engagement in the future. Smart brands will get a great payoff from this and so will their customers.

Good on Twitter and kudos to Disney and Pixar for having the unwavering vision to try something new - especially for a large corporation - that takes guts and strong leadership.
