Self-styled American rapper Vanilla Ice was due to perform a concert, at the Barasti Bar in Dubai tonight (Wednesday 31st March). But the beach bar was forced to cancel the planned concert, after they came under fire on the popular social networking site Twitter.

According to a recent report at arabianbusiness.com, the Barasti Bar caused the outrage after it sent a text message to hundreds of its regulars, informing them that the Vanilla Ice concert would still go ahead, despite the period of mourning for Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The bar – which is situated at Dubai’s Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Hotel – sent the text message that read: “NORMAL OPERATION. WE ARE NOT DRY! NICE, NICE BABY! 5PM-3AM C U ON THE SAND.” This message obviously offended and upset many people.

Twitter was then inundated with comments, from people who criticized the remarks for being insensitive, given that it was only Tuesday that the tragic death of Sheikh Ahmed was announced. One Twitter user described the text message as tasteless and disgusting.

Prominent Emirati social commentator Mishaal Gergawi posted a note on his Twitter page that said he was “disgusted by Barasti’s SMS that they r not dry tonight!! RT [retweet] & don’t stop until someone shuts it down tonight.” After that, the concert was shelved.
