Television viewers use Twitter and Facebook to share TV experience

Judging by new data from the Nielsen Company, it looks like watching television while surfing the Internet is becoming more and more popular in U.S. households these days. In fact, nearly 60% (134 million people) do it at least once a month reportedly.

According to a recent report at mashable.com, the average time that is spent consuming media on both TV and Internet, is now three and a half hours per month. That is nearly 35 percent more time spent doing both, than the same time last year.

But these figures shouldn’t really come as a surprise, if you take in mind the upward trend in simultaneous media consumption. People did admit to using the Internet around 34% of the time that they were watching television – 14% more than a year ago.

Part of the reason for this Nielsen says is increased DVR usage. But we also have to remember that many television viewers take to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter nowadays, to share their experiences with friends and followers.
