The Winter Olympics 2022 host city will be announced at the end of July 2015, and even though we await this news it seems the BBC has lost out to Eurosport for the Olympic Games TV rights in the UK from 2022.
It has been announced that the European TV rights for the Olympic Games has been given to Eurosport in a new £922 million deal.
Because of this, it could mean the BBC will lose full coverage of the Olympic Games from 2022 in the United Kingdom. Hopefully parent company Discovery will lease some rights to play.
This new deal will be put into play for majority of Europe from 2018, and in the UK / France from 2022. The BBC has reported Eurosport not owning a free-to-air terrestrial channel, which means they will probably have to acquire one, if not they could license the coverage to another channel such as channel 4, ITV or even the BBC.
Discovery will apparently be broadcasting around 200 hours minimum of the games, and 100 hours of the Olympic Winter Games. Live coverage has to be offered and made available to free-to-air channels.
Rio de Janeiro in Brazil will be holding the 2016 Olympics, and Tokyo, Japan will hold it in 2020.
Are you shocked that Eurosport beats BBC for Olympic Games TV rights?
