Facebook is to turn off FriendFeed for good, and from April 9, 2015 users will no longer be able to discuss or discover any interesting stuff you friends find on the Internet. It looks like it was a waste of time purchasing FriendFeed in 2009 where Facebook paid $50 million for it.
The reason Facebook is shutting down FriendFeed is simply down to lack of active users, it was former Google engineers that found a way to keep track of friends’ activity being it on different social media services.
Traffic has dropped on the site so its fate was inevitable, few active people equals less traffic, which means no point using resources to keep it online.
Facebook sent Re/code a statement basically saying they maintained the service for five year, but declining usage is now the fraction of what it once was. This is the reason they are now winding down.
FriendFeed will shutdown on April 9, 2015. RIP FriendFeed, hope you rest well and the people who worked on the site get other jobs.
How do you feel about FriendFeed closing its doors?
