Selma weekend vs Box Office movies on MLK day

The domestic studio weekend estimates are in for Friday January 16th to Sunday 18, 2015. The civil rights drama Selma didn’t really do too well over the Martin Luther King Jr weekend.

Looking at the Selma weekend vs Box Office movies on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2015 is rather worrying, it only came in at 5th place with Box Office takings reeling in just $8,300,000 over the Jan 16 – Jan 18 weekend.

The movie to take number one slot was American Sniper (Bradley Cooper) with $90,205,000, then in second was The Wedding Ringer starring Kevin Hart taking $21,000,000, third was Paddington with $19,287,000 and fourth taking in this weekend $14,050,000 is Taken 3.

Selma Oscar nominations didn’t do the Box Office weekend takings any good, considering they were only up for two nominations. This also caused controversy, which started of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag off in Twitter.

Today is MLK Day and considering it was a film based on him it was thought the movie would have done rather well over the Martin Luther King weekend. MLK celebrations and Selma should have tied in rather well but it didn’t. The movie only took in $2 million on Sunday January 18th, taking in just $10.3 million over a four-day period.

Selma’s opening weekend took $11.3 million worldwide, so for it to only take $8m on MLK weekend is shocking.

Tweets are coming in saying in an ideal world “Selma” should be breaking all Box Office records on MLK day. Wonder what the Selma Box Office takings will be for today; hopefully we will be able to find this out for tomorrow.

Are you disappointed Selma didn’t do too well in takings considering it was MLK 2015 weekend?
