Maleficent movie $70m opening smashes X-Men, Godzilla

Angelina Jolie still knows how to pull the viewers in with her new Disney action Maleficent movie, so much so it has a $70m opening, which smashes X-Men Days of Future Past and Godzilla 2014.

Maleficent has made it to number one in the US Box Office charts with an opening of $70 million ($100.6 million international), the movie is based on the villain from Sleeping Beauty and Jolie apparently is amazing and plays her part very well indeed.

This new movie at first was apparently risky for Disney, “Sleeping Beauty” is magical for kids and adults alike, so to make a movie from the villain’s perspective it could have gone either way and by being number one at the Box Office says it was worth the risk.

The US Box Office Top Ten looks like this
Number 2: X-Men: Days of Future Past $32.6 million ($95.6 million international), Number 3: A Million Ways to Die in the West $17.1 million ($10.3 million international), Number 4: Godzilla $12.2 million ($15 million Int), Number 5: Blended $8.4 million, Number 6: Neighbors $7.7 million ($7.6 million Int), Number 7: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $3.8 million ($4.1 million Int), Number 8: Million Dollar Arm $3.7 million, Number 9: Chef $2 million and Number 10 is The Other Woman with $1.4 million – For more information please visit ABC News.

The Maleficent movie is also a success on social media sites, it has just under 20,000 Pinterest fans, 3,034,162 likes on Facebook, 49.4K Twitter followers and people are also taking to Google+ to follow the movie as well.

Maleficent took number 1 slot in the US Box Office chart and A Million Ways to Dies in the West is at number 2, so when you look at the two one day before US release social media stats are rather interesting to say the least.

When it comes to tweeting and searching both movie names have a vast volume, “Maleficent” garnered 376,000 tweets and 153k retweets, 257k Google views, 69.6M YouTube views and 2.50M Facebook likes.
