Top trending content and social network sharing behaviour

This morning AddThis released its analysis of the top trending content during the first quarter. The company’s tools now reach 97 percent of the online population in the U.S. and are used on 14 million Websites globally. The report is based on an analysis of more than 100 million content sharing and consumer engagement points across desktop and mobile devices from January 1-March 31, 2014.

Social sharing behaviour for top networks that were used for engaging and sharing content, as well as data on peak sharing times were included in the report. Even the most viral content was analyzed, as so was the top trending topics, most shared content and sharing methods.

In rank order the top trending topics were Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, the Golden Globe Awards and the Sochi Olympics. But, when it comes to the most popular for sharing content on social networks Facebook was at the top with 26 percent of all social sharing, Twitter came in at second for sharing entertainment content with 26 percent and Google Plus with 14 percent.

When it comes to sharing sports related content and engagement Facebook peaked at 36 percent, second place went to printing with 25 percent and Twitter in third with 22 percent.

Politics content shared was seen more on Facebook with 27 percent, sharing political content on Twitter was at 21 percent. Please do read the full report here.
