Ferguson’s retirement kicks-off global Twitter storm – Mourinho favourite for the job

Social media sites across the world went into a frenzy of speculation as to who will be the next Man United manager, with nearly 228,000 tweets recorded in the first 1.5 hours following the announcement of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, according to global social media monitoring software provider Synthesio.

Synthesio also monitored social media sites, football forums and the comments section of newspapers across the world to identify which manager fans thought would succeed Ferguson. Current favourites are:

• José Mourinho with 44.2% of comments favouring his appointment
• David Moyes 43.2%
• Jurgen Klopp 5.3%
• Ole Gunner Solskaer 5.3%
• Jupp Heynckes 1.2%
• Martin O’Neill 0.4%
• Harry Redknapp 0.1%

Catriona Oldershaw, Managing Director UK of Synthesio, said: “The reaction to Ferguson’s retirement has been huge, outstripping the reaction to The Budget or the death of Margaret Thatcher. And this isn’t just a UK story – we’ve seen conversations occurring in 65 countries so far, reflecting what a huge global brand Manchester United is. By analysing these conversations we can determine who people are tipping to be the next United manager.

It’s now clearly a two horse race with fans favouring either José Mourinho or David Moyes to succeed Ferguson.”
