3G iPad 2 Heads to China and Hong Kong Opens Apple Store

Anyone will know that the Apple iPad has dominated the tablet market and the iPad 2 has been a huge success. More recently our thoughts have turned to the iPad 3 but news today concerns the iPad 2 3G version as it is now heading to China. We can also tell you that the first Apple retail store for Hong Kong is set to open soon.

Previously only Wi-Fi versions of the iPad 2 have been sold in China but Apple now has the necessary certification to put the iPad 2 3G up for sale there. Arnold Kim of MacRumors, sourced from The Wall Street Journal, tells how a device with the model number A1396 (the 3G iPad2) has been given a network access license by China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center. The model is compatible with 3G standard WCDMA and would work on the China Unicom network.

As well as this Penn Olson reports that Apple’s website in China listed the iPad 2 with 3G for sale yesterday although this was later removed. The shipping time had been listed at 2 to 3 weeks. However, it certainly looks as though the 3G iPad 2 will go on sale very soon in China.

In other Apple news it seems that Hong Kong will see its first Apple retail store open its doors on September 24. The store is situated at the International Finance Center mall although Apple has not yet confirmed this news. However according to a report on Apple Insider, posters about the opening can be seen at the retail center and Engadget China has also confirmed the September 24 opening.

The mall housing this new Apple store, in the city’s Central District, has over 200 stores across 4 floors and apparently Apple allocated a $20 million budget for construction alone. The store will be vast with a staff of over 300 and expected shoppers per day of 40,000. With numbers like that it won’t be any surprise to see Apple opening more stores in the region.
