iPhone 5 Could Have Smaller Screen Than Expected: Disappointed?

The nearer we get to a launch and subsequent release of the Apple iPhone 5, the more speculation and news we hear. Just in the last few days we’ve told of talk of the iPhone 5 coming to T-Mobile as well as Sprint and this morning gave details of the official Sprint line for employees about the iPhone 5. Now we have yet more news, this time about the screen size and far from being larger than on the iPhone 4 it seems that many are about to be disappointed.

We make no apologies for bringing you all these snippets as we hear them as we know how many of our readers are keen for iPhone 5 news. For some time there have been rumors about specs for the next iPhone and although as usual Apple has remained secretive, one of the most widespread rumors (which many expected to be true) was that the iPhone 5 would have a larger screen. However Todd Haselton of BGR brings news, sourced from Taiwan newspaper DigiTimes, that the iPhone 5 display will be no larger than 4-inches, according to panel suppliers.

It’s now thought that the iPhone 5 display will be between 3.5 and 3.7-inches. The iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch display so if this report were true the iPhone 5 will have only the same or a marginally larger screen. Along with this it’s also reported that instead of the glass back on the current iPhone 5, the iPhone 5 will instead have a metal-backed chassis. Recent reports have said that the iPhone 5 will be largely the same in design as the iPhone 5 so this would seem to fit.

Many people though had been hoping for a display of at least 4-inches on the iPhone 5, especially given the popularity of many Androids with larger displays. Both the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Droid Bionic will have 4.3-inch displays and the just-announced Galaxy S II LTE will have a whopping 4.5-inch display along with other upcoming handsets such as the HTC Holiday.

In other iPhone news we recently published an article on a leaked back cover purported to be for the iPhone 5, labeled N94, which closely resembled the cover for the iPhone 4 although there was also a possibility that the leaked part was for the new rumored low-cost iPhone 4 version. Today Richard Lai over on Engadget reports on a new front assembly leak from uBreakiFix (see photo above) and it does look as though this N94 label is more likely to be for the cheaper version of the iPhone 4.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on the latest reports of screen-size for the iPhone 5. Would you be happy if the display was only the same or very slightly larger for the iPhone 5? Maybe you’d be really disappointed if the iPhone 5 screen is not at least 4-inches? Let us know with your comments.
