Top 10 Trending Twitter Topics: Hurricane Irene Shaking It Up?

Its that time of the week again where we bring you the week’s top trends on Twitter. In recent weeks it has been all about football, which is possibly the most discussed topic on the social media site. But there is always hot competition from a number of other topics, will Hurricane Irene shake things up? The top 10 trends are supplied kindly by Matt Silverman of Mashable.

So lets get things started at number 10 with Libya! This country has been a large topic of discussion worldwide for some months now, with Colonel Gaddafi being the subject of a manhunt by rebels. Tweeters flooded the site when the dictator’s compound in Tripoli was stormed. Next up is UK boy band One Direction, who rose to fame on talent show the X Factor. Their newest hit “What Makes You Beautiful” send Twitter fans crazy.

In at 8 this week is another boy band, Super Junior. Members of the Korean group celebrated birthdays as well as being congratulated for their recent win with hit song “Mr. Simple”. Regular charter Justin Bieber is this week’s number 7, with tweeters encouraging the Canadian pop star to meet one of his biggest fans. Lizzie is a young girl with a brain tumor and wanted to meet her idol; it was also “Belieber World” this week and Bieber made a surprise appearance at a Taylor Swift gig.

Up at number 6 is Apple who were all over the news after their influential and iconic leader Steve Jobs announced he was stepping down as CEO. Tim Cook has taken up the new role with Jobs being made chairman, it has been predicted that Apple will stage a huge double event for Jobs’ goodbye and the unveil of the iPhone 5. Rapper Lil Wayne enters the chart this week at 5 as a result of his new album “Tha Carter IV”.

This week’s number 4 is singer Demi Lovato who was celebrating her 19th Birthday and got a lot of love from her fans. Tweeters discussed the young singer for the release of her new track “SKYSCRAPER” and also that she should tour in their countries. Up next is the big one we thought could be number 1, its Hurricane Irene! The storm which has been causing chaos on the Eastern US coast has been a large topic of discussion as Twitter users look to keep each other informed of its path.

This week’s runner up is Aaliyah, the singer that died in a tragic plane crash 10 years ago. Tweeters have been celebrating the anniversary of her passing by discussing her songs, roles in films and influence on their lives. Her most memorable hit was “Rock The Boat”. Ok, so its time to unveil this week’s number 1 and it is no big surprise. Football/soccer has done it again!

Tweeters all over the world spoke about Arsenal’s match last weekend with Liverpool, also a clash between Santos and Morelia. The Champions League draw was another topic of discussion, as was the Cesc Fabregas transfer to Barcelona. We strongly expect football to top the chart again next week, with the site going crazy for today’s premiership match which saw Man United destroy Arsenal 8-2.
