Facebook Expands Content: BBC’s Top Gear & Miramax Movies

Facebook has expanded its media library by adding the BBC’s hit show, Top Gear to their selection of TV show offerings. The popular car show joins another BBC classic, Doctor Who as watchable programs on the massively popular social networking site. The fun does not stop there, Mark Zuckerberg and co are also adding a selection of Miramax movies to the site for its 750 million users to watch.

Big blockbuster movies such as Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, No Country For Old Men and Gangs Of New York will all be available to watch on Facebook. You can watch these shows and films on your PC for a small fee which is charged in Facebook Credits. Cnet UK reports that watching an episode of Top Gear will cost you 91p (15 credits) with a movie being £1.88 (30 credits). These seem like very reasonable prices to me, given the convenience.

Eventually more episodes and movies will be added to the site, huge Batman movie the Dark Knight is already available to rent. Once you rent any of the titles you will have 48 hours to stream them as many times as you wish. One of the largest advantages of Facebook’s service is that there is no subscription, it is as and when you want. LoveFilm is the UK’s largest online movie rental service but is subscription based which some dislike.

The app to rent these titles is also available on the iPad as well as your PC, increasing the number of platforms this service is accessible on. Facebook are really focusing on bringing their service to many elements of our lives, especially after hooking up with Ticketmaster so that Facebook friends can help book events together. The new interactive map shows you where you friends are sitting with the ability to tag your seat so they can see you.

The social networking giant also dramatically overhauled its privacy settings, most notably with a change to the way pictures are tagged. Will the addition of TV shows and movies help Facebook to become even more powerful? Let us know if you will use these extra services by leaving a comment.
