Apple iPhone 5 Heading to Sprint: Mid-October Release

The Apple iPhone 5 is still the focus of attention for many people and in our recent posts about it we’ve shown a new infographic, talked about price, a likely release date and also some leaked components. Today we have news that will no doubt please a lot of people as it looks as though as well as being carried by Verizon and AT&T, the iPhone 5 will also be headed to Sprint.

We’ve felt for some time that it was likely that Sprint and maybe also T-Mobile would carry the next iPhone but only last week some doubts were cast on this. However yesterday our Matt Tran told of reports that the iPhone 5 may well support multiple carriers as it would be dual-mode and so compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks. Now further evidence has arrived that the iPhone 5 will indeed be carried by Sprint, from none other than The Wall Street Journal.

Although at various times we’ve heard release dates of late September or October the WSJ also gives a release timeframe for the Sprint iPhone 5 of mid-October. As well as this two people “familiar with the matter” state that Verizon and AT&T will also be retailing the iPhone 5 in mid-October. Sprint is currently the third largest carrier in the US and this would be a very timely move to support its future. In yet more intrigue the WSJ also states that Sprint will also start to carry the iPhone 4 at the same time.

This is certainly interesting and we feel it may not be the existing iPhone 4. Regular readers will know that yesterday we reported on the speculation surrounding a new version of the iPhone 4 which would have less storage and be much cheaper, which was anticipated to release at the same time as the iPhone 5. It seems logical to think then that the Sprint iPhone 4 may be this new low-cost iPhone.

This latest news has caused Sprint stock to soar, according to Chris Burns over on Slash Gear and if you check out the article you can also see an image showing the stock leap. We’d like to hear your thoughts on this. Are you a Sprint customer and well satisfied at the news that you should be able to get your hands on the next Apple iPhone?
