Low-cost iPhone 4 Special: Could Launch Alongside iPhone 5

As usual the Apple iPhone 5 continues to be the focus of a lot of tech attention and just in the last few days we’ve looked at price, component leaks, an infographic about the evolution of the iPhone and also the fact that it looks as though the iPhone 5 will support multiple networks in the U.S. Today we have news that a cheap version of the iPhone 4 may in fact be revealed at the next iPhone launch and may release at the same time as the iPhone 5.

Over the last few months we have heard various rumblings about two possible iPhones coming, one sometimes dubbed the iPhone 4S and speculated to be a less expensive variant. More recently we reported on the latest rumors about a cheaper iPhone, the iCloud iPhone which could hit the shelves at the same time as the iPhone 5 and which might be free on the usual contract, made possible by less onboard Flash memory. Now lo and behold, today comes news that Apple suppliers are already in production of an iPhone 4 with reduced memory.

The news comes to us from Devindra Hardawar over on VentureBeat, sourced from Reuters. Although Apple would usually offer the previous iPhone as a cheaper model once a new iPhone incarnation arrived, this is the first time a cheaper version will have been especially made. The low-cost iPhone 4 is reported to have an 8GB memory instead of the 16 or 32GB offered on the present iPhone 4. Amar Toor over on Engadget also tells about the cheaper iPhone 4 and says a Korean manufacturer is apparently producing parts.

Insiders also said that the iPhone 5 would have a larger touchscreen, improved antenna and an 8-megapixel camera as most expected, along with stating it’s being aimed for a launch in late September. This would fit current release rumors of an October 7 release date. As usual we’ll be keeping our ears and eyes peeled for more information and will let you know as soon as we do.
