Apple iPad 3 Conjecture: 4G LTE Seems a Real Possibility

We’ve been endeavoring to keep readers informed about the latest Apple iPad 3 developments and speculation and a couple of days ago told how the likely release date is now not likely to be until the first quarter of 2012. Today we have heard some interesting speculation about the iPad 3, which although is pure conjecture, is pretty interesting nonetheless.

Last week our Matt Tran told how Apple is apparently internally testing 4G LTE on an iPhone model, although we felt that LTE support would be too soon for the iPhone 5 and more likely for the iPhone 6. Now we have further news that an iOS device with LTE is actually being field-tested which begs the question of whether the iPad 3 will support 4G LTE, as per a previous rumor. If so this would be a smash hit with consumers, (even more than a usual iPad launch), but of course just yet we are only discussing the possibility.

Over on 9to5Mac, Mark Gurman brings the news of Apple field-testing iOS devices with LTE. Not only that but its iOS 5 test app also contains references to LTE. It’s unclear whether the devices concerned are iPhones, iPod touches or iPads but the idea that at least one of these devices is at a field-test stage using LTE opens up some real prospects. Added to this we’re told that the field-test app also references LTE SIM-cards so that means the devices being used for testing are developed enough to use a SIM-card.

This all means of course, that the devices being used for field-testing with LTE could also be using iOS 5, the next operating system, which will be the OS used for the next-generation iPad, the iPad 3. Although the next iPhone and iPod touch will also be using iOS 5, the iPad 3 being a larger device would be more able to accommodate the extra components and larger battery that would be necessary for LTE. Although none of this is evidence it certainly opens the possibility of an iPad 3 with LTE and 9to5Mac also adds another snippet. A Qualcomm MDM9615 chip intended to support LTE and more, according to Cell Phone Junkie, should be available by late 2011.

A report on Apple Bitch also touts that the iPad 3 will be the first Apple device supporting 4G LTE, so for another take on this check it out at the link above.
