Galaxy S II Heading with Droid Bionic to Launch Pad Before iPhone 5?

The Samsung Galaxy S II (sometimes dubbed S2) and the Apple iPhone 5 are two of the most-anticipated smartphones of the year and only the Motorola Droid Bionic matches them as far as hype is concerned. We’ve been keeping readers up-to-date with all the latest about these handsets and for some time wondered which would be first to see a US release. However after recent news it seems the Galaxy S II or Droid Bionic will head to the launch pad before the iPhone 5, at least that’s looking likely.

We recently told of the Samsung invitational product launch on August 29, in which it’s widely felt we’ll see the launch of the Galaxy S II stateside on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Some have imagined this means an instant release but we feel it’s highly unlikely to release on the same day and it’s more likely to be released some time in early September. There’s even a chance of it making its arrival at the same time as the Motorola Droid Bionic, due in early September.

Various rumored release dates have come and gone for the iPhone 5 and just yesterday our Maddy Rowe gave us the latest information about a likely release date, that this time looks like one of the more credible release rumors we’ve heard. It seems that pre-orders for the iPhone 5 may open on September 30 with a likely release date of October 7 or possibly October 14. With this in mind it appears that the Galaxy S II or Droid Bionic will hit the US before the iPhone 5 which will certainly give either a head start on sales and could really steer some people away from waiting further for the iPhone 5.

Many people have been hoping for one of these three phones to release and have now been waiting longer than any of us could have anticipated. The Droid Bionic was first announced at the beginning of the year and delayed for improvements and the iPhone 5 similarly was expected around June or July but has yet to see the light of day. Meanwhile the Galaxy S II has been available in other regions for some months but its arrival in the US has been painfully slow. At this time then, it seems that whichever is released first could really hit the jackpot and Galaxy S II sales could be lifted even higher with news we heard yesterday as it received the Best Mobile Phone in Europe award from EISA.

We’ll certainly keep you informed with all the news on this triad of smartphones as we hear it. We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Have you already decided on one of these three being your next smartphone purchase or maybe you’ll be swayed by whichever makes it onto the shelves first? Let us know with your comments.
